The Counting House

Oil on Board, 20” x 20”

One of the joys of daily life in the Lower Falmouth Bottom for over 50 years has been passing by the Counting House at the corner of River Road and Gordon St. Built in the 1840’s, it served business interests at the Historic Port of Falmouth, in later years became a residence and most recently has stood vacant. Nestled below the Falmouth Bridge within the flood plain of the Rappahannock, high water frequently rises to its foundation, or above, and has for nearly 200 years. Its wide weatherboard of old growth timbers, worn, and charming, is framed by the bright red berries of the nandina.. Traditionally a symbol of good fortune, peace, and the beauty of age, its brilliant red and green branches have become a favorite Christmas presence in our home.
