The Bell House by Marcia Chaves

Updated: Jul 15, 2022

Whenever I drive to Colonial Beach from my home in Falmouth, I recall so many treasured moments from childhood and beyond, of summers at my grandparents cottage in the 40’s to my honeymoon there in the 60’s, of strolling on the boardwalk after dinner, crabbing on the dock , even accompanying my grandfather as he conducted business at the beautiful old Bank of Westmoreland.

I had always admired the old Victorian house of Alexander Graham Bell. It was not until several summers ago that my sister Cindy and I decided to have a getaway weekend at the Bell house bed and breakfast that I was able to take in the elegant nostalgia of its interior. Our gracious hostess joined us for wine and cheese while gazing at the Potomac from our rocking chairs on the porch, then we enjoyed a crab cake dinner over on creek side, and finally were served a sumptuous breakfast before our departure the next morning.

An icon of vintage Colonial Beach, the Bell house embodies the rich heritage of this riverside community that has formed the backdrop of so many gilded summer memories for residents and visitors alike. Marcia Chaves
