The Best of the Rest
The Artists’ Alliance (AA) at Jarrett Thor Fine Arts is pleased to highlight photographer Rob Rudick as the May featured artist. Rob brings his eclectic mixed portfolio to our walls. The idea for this show had two germinating points. First, it follows up on his recent major retrospective show at the Tappahannock Art Gallery. He said that he was not able to show all of his favorite works in that show, so he took this opportunity to build on that. Second, his selection of the picture “Outdoor Table”, drove all of the surrounding selections. That picture is strong in color, as a centerpiece, and its neighbors more subtly reflect the coloration. The show was built outward, as the pictures worked together.
These photos were taken in four countries (Spain, Portugal, Italy, and China) and four states (Wyoming, Texas, Maryland, and Virginia). (Extra credit if you can match them.) They showcase three different print media: canvas, prints on watercolor paper with a cold wax finish, and traditional photo prints. All have the traditional characteristics of his work, as they concentrate on the use of color (except for B&W), shape, feeling, and the sheer beauty of the subject. He strives to create pictures with scenes that hold the audience’s eye, and command repeated viewings.
AA members also are displaying their painting, photography, pottery, sculpture, jewelry, and wood furniture.
Carl and Joyce Thor continue to sell their art in the adjoining galleries. The opening is Friday, May 12, 6-9 pm, in conjunction with the Second Friday Art Walk. The shows run through June 4. The gallery is located at 100 Taylor St., Suite 101, in Colonial Beach. The public is invited free of charge. The gallery is open Friday – Sunday, 11-5.
