Jan Elmore was raised in Fairfax County, Virginia, and graduated from Virginia Tech with a degree in Art and a minor in Art Education. She taught Art in the Roanoke County, Virginia, Public Schools at all grade levels, and in private schools in Charlottesville, Virginia. She trained as a Montessori classroom guide and integrated Art into her Middle School curriculum. Jan was a member of the boards of Piedmont Council for the Arts and the Second Street Gallery where she led student and teacher workshops that focused on a variety of disciplines and cultures.
Since 1985, Jan has been exhibiting in nationally recognized juried art and craft shows. Her work has evolved from modern porcelain jewelry to thematic mirror frames that feature mixed media landscape, forest, and desert scenes, to the contemporary hardwood frames she makes today. Over more recent years, she has developed a body of mixed media sculpture that synthesizes the use of a wide assortment of materials with her love of design. Beautiful woods, hammered metals, fibers, leather, painted canvases, and other materials – ordinary to exotic - are integrated into wall mounted sculptures that bring together shape, line, color, form, and texture in Jan’s unique compositions.
